First Grade Teachers

June 2014

It is my pleasure to recommend Brooke Ramos as a creative, lively teacher.  She worked in my classroom as the ESL teacher twice per week for two forty-minute blocks and the children were always excited to see her.  Her enthusiasm for her work and her passion for service make her a dynamic teacher.  She came to class prepared with original, interactive language activities.  When necessary she used differentiation for the different levels within the group.  She was also able to manage behavior in order to maximize learning.

After 8 months of instruction with Brooke, the children in her ESL groups in first grade all improved by at least one level and up to four levels on the nationally recognized IPT exam.  Not only did the students´ scores improve, they retained the new skills she taught them.  Brooke is also well trained in integrating technology into her lessons.  She did a lesson on subject pronouns using the Puppet Pals application on the classroom iPads.  Children were shown an original iMovie video and song created by Brooke and then encouraged to make their own video on Puppet Pals with their partners.  Besides practicing pronouns and listening to their own voices on the recording, the purpose was to teach next year´s first grade students about pronouns.  The activity was extremely popular with the students and it was great practice for them to hear themselves speak English in their voice recordings.

Brooke was conscientious of the current PYP Unit we were covering and structured her lessons according to the theme of the unit to maintain consistency between the classroom and her ESL small group.  For example, during the unit “I’m OK, You’re OK¨ which covers feelings and expressions, she read the book, ¨Happy¨, a book of different emotions depicted through drawings of fish.  Instead of just reading it, she had them ¨read¨ the picture and guess what the fish was feeling.  The children then had to draw their own fish demonstrating its feeling through their own artistic style.  The fun part was when they had to guess what each other´s fish was feeling.  It was a great way to recall past vocabulary and practice correct sentence structure, all while sticking to the theme of the unit.  This activity not only related the unit, but also used the CAFE strategy of Expanding Vocabulary that we teach in the classroom in conjunction with Daily 5.

It was only one year, but Brooke and I worked well together.  The children truly enjoyed learning with her and she was an attribute to my classroom.  I highly recommend her to work with elementary level children in either a private tutoring session or in a full classroom setting. If you should need any additional information you can feel free to contact me by email or at my cell phone anytime.
